The Day You Left a Legacy

Talia Meade

Legacy, I mean the word itself is so, strong. It is hard to believe that a 17 year old is expected to make something of themselves in one year, nonetheless in one day. But I quickly realized that the people surrounding me in this graduating class are some of the brightest, and most empowering individuals I have met.

Every year starting in 2011 graduates from Nepean High School gather at Confederation. Why? To leave their legacy of course. It all started when Nepean was a target in the local news for ‘froshing’. The grads at the time were protesting one student's expulsion due to a specific incident that took place while hazing. The principal during this time was Mr. Bibeau, he wanted the Nepean graduates to create a better legacy for themselves. 5 years later, the tradition continues.

We gathered in the Cafeteria of the no longer running school (if you think Nepean is confusing to get around, just wait until you get to Confederation) and waited. There were some ideas floating in the air of what the grads encounter on the so called ‘Legacy Day’, but no one had the day pin pointed. You hear there’s going to be talk of post secondary education and a session on this and a session on that. The murmurs stop as you play a few warm up games, you listen to a pretty cool speaker and the day begins.

The amount of student run activities going on did not only make the event that much more entertaining but it inspired the whole day. To get to see your peers and what they choose to do with their small amount of time as a Knight is quite something.

During the mere hours spent at Confederation it is safe to say that you aren’t quite sure if you have left a legacy, but at least you know that you’ll get there, I promise.

The Stress of Grade Twelve

By Liv Todd

Senior year.. If you asked me two years ago what these words would mean to me, I would answer with keywords such as; partying, time of my life, has everything all figured out, and the queen bee’s of the school. Of course in the eyes of a fifteen year old, grade twelve creates a stigma that life is awesome and stress-free. If you asked me right now what the word graduate  means to me, I would answer with the words; anxiety, having no sleep, and endless relatives ask me “so what are you going to do with the rest of your life?”

Grade twelve is nothing like going to war but it’s similar in the sense it creates intense stress on all seventeen year olds in (barely) a year to decide what the rest of their lives entails.. From the hours of homework spent doing every night, just to keep up the 85 percent average is not a breeze for anyone. Going through this myself, I have made some stress reliever methods, hopefully you can gain some helpful insight from this

After school I like to spend a half an hour to take a hot bath. This relieves any stress I have going on, and it  can help to take everything off my mind. Afterwards I like to write any assignments I received  throughout the day on my calendar to keep myself organized and on the right track. I typically spend one to two hours a night on homework and make goals for myself to keep me encouraged. Around 10:30 p.m. I start going to bed to give myself a nine hour sleep to keep energized for the next day.

Grade twelve may not be easy, but it’s important to stay on top of everything regardless of what challenges you may run into. As quite a dramatic teenager, this year seems like life couldn’t get any worse but as long as you find a stress reliever that works for you, it will truly make your senior year  worthwhile.
